Bush vibes

There’s nothing quite like the symphony of the bush. Especially when you get to experience it at the exclusive Fifty Seven Waterberg!

Fifty Seven Waterberg is the kind of destination that never quite leaves you. Once you’ve visited this incredible game lodge, which is situated in the heart of the magnificent Welgevonden Game Reserve that forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, it will always have a place in your heart.

With their incredible location in what was declared an official UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, we were really not surprised by the sheer quality of the game viewing … but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t still take our breath away. With an awe-inspiring array of flora and fauna, including Africa’s iconic Big 5, the experienced local guides are guaranteed to ensure that your game drives include connections with nature that you’ll never forget. A real haven for wildlife, the elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards and buffalo are kept company by over 50 other species of mammals, as well as over 300 species of birds for the keen ornithologists. With so much to see, we could have happily spent all day exploring the area from the back of a game vehicle. Totally worth waking up at the crack of dawn for!

Staying in the game vehicle would have meant missing some of the other incredible aspects … so it’s just as well that we were able to bring ourselves to take a little time to immerse ourselves in all that this special destination has to offer. The lodge itself is elegant, exclusive, and comes with undisputed attention to detail. Each of the five suites is bursting with rustic charm, featuring a king-sized bed and a private patio with magnificent views of the bushveld. While the lodge is small enough to ensure exclusivity and personal attention (there’s a max of 10 guests at any one time), the suites are large and full of character. Each room is a minimum of 80 square metres, giving guests ample room to feel at home, spread out, and really get comfortable. Stay in the Zebra or Springbok honeymoon suites, or enjoy your weekend in the Rooihartbees, Nguni, or Gemsbok rooms.

When not out enjoying a game drive or relaxing on your private patio, the main lodge is the perfect place to sit back with a G&T and enjoy some scenic downtime on the deck beside the crystal clear blue pool – perfect for those hot days in the bush. We especially loved the bohemian beds that litter the deck, offering comfortable respite from the stress of the city while you enjoy the sounds of the bush and the unparalleled views.

When the bustle of the bush has helped you to work up an appetite, the team at Fifty Seven Waterberg are on hand to ensure that your every culinary desire is met with three hearty meals a day. The food is cooked to perfection, bringing in a variety of African culinary influences to create truly delicious fare. From the breakfast buffet with a selection of fresh fruits, cheeses, pancakes and more to start your day with, to a light and lovely chicken salad for lunch and three-course feast for dinner, there’s nosh aplenty.

Visiting for a special occasion? The boma is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or celebration around a welcoming fire and under the unmatched South African night sky. Bliss.

With Fifty Seven Waterberg having firmly established a special place in our hearts, we’re already planning our next trip there. Just a three hours’ drive from Joburg and Pretoria, and in a malaria-free zone, it’s our number one choice for a special weekend getaway in the heart of the South African bush.

Rooms are available from R3 875 per person per night sharing with full board (this includes all meals, select drinks, and morning and afternoon game drives), or R4 400 per person per night sharing for the deluxe honeymoon suites (so worth it!).
