Arty Weekends in Joburg

Arty Weekends in Joburg

Nobody sees a city quite like the artists who live there, which is why we couldn’t wait to ask Turbine Art Fair’s Makgati Molebatsi and Jessica Webster about their ultimate Joburg weekends.

How is your ideal weekend in Joburg spent?

Makgati Molebatsi: I always start with a Saturday morning walk to the Westcliff stairs, followed by a brunch at Service Station in Melville. I love Melville for its vibrancy, quirky shops and lively restaurants and bars.  I’ll either meet a friend for dinner on Saturday night, or maybe attend a dinner with my artist friends. I love sleeping in on Sunday mornings, only to pop out to pick up the FT Weekend, and devour it over the entire Sunday afternoon…

Where are we most likely to spot you on the weekends?

Jessica Webster: The Johannesburg library, if not at the office surfing the internet for interesting and new happenings in Joburg. – If I’m lucky enough to go out on the weekend, it’s to the Rooftop BBQ in Maboneng. I love the emotive setting at the 12 Decades Hotel Rooftop. It’s a great place to have an early dinner and to catch up with family and friends.
