We visit Blow Dry Co in Parkhurst to find out more…
Being able to spend 30 minutes, or less, getting our hair washed and styled while we curate our Instagram feeds has us in heaven, and we were excited to pop over to Parkhurst and check out the new kid on the block – Blow Dry Co.
They have only been open 2 months but are proving a popular addition to Parkhurst’s busy 4th Avenue. Decorated in beautiful shades of light pinks and greys, we loved the chic, upmarket feel of the blow dry bar, and sipped on our refreshing Mimosa while we chatted a bit to Bridget Bassage, the owner.
Bridget had had the idea of running her own business for many years, through her marketing studies and first corporate gig down in Cape Town, and although she just didn’t know what it was, but she knew that being an entrepreneur was for her.
At 25 she joined some friends who were working on then yachts at the time and for the next 7 years travelled the globe seeing the wonders of the world. It was during a stay in New York that she discovered the Dry Bar concept and used to visit every Saturday morning to have her hair styled and spend time with her girlfriends at the same time.
A seed was born, and as she mulled this over the concept of opening her own dry bar began to form. Not knowing much about the hair care industry did not stop Bridget and she industriously studied and absorbed as much information as she could get her hands on.
Two years later, Blow Dry Co opened its doors and the beautiful salon is already proving popular amongst locals and visitors alike.
‘It’s only blow dry’s – no nails, no waxing – just blow dry’s’ says Bridget. ‘Of course, we do offer unique services such as up styles for special functions, hydrating hair masques and root touch ups for those ladies who may need to stretch the time between their hair appointments, as well as a great overnight ‘Wash Your Wig’ service, which uses the best local products to take care of real hair wigs.
This is a place to sink in to the comfy chairs, enjoy the beautifully decorated interior – who doesn’t like looking at a beautiful wall of flowers when having your head massaged, and sip on a mimosa or a cappuccino while chick flicks play on the telly. Think of it as your 30 minutes of peace and quiet.
A great touch is the USB ports and handbag hooks located in the counters – loved this!
Blow Dry Co use only Kevin Murphy hair care products, and Australian brand that Bridget feels matches in to the ethos of Blow Dry Co perfectly – fashion forward and glamourous, non-damaging and paraben and sulphate free as well. These products are available to purchase too.
We love that the price point is affordable and blow dry’s range between R 200 – R 230 depending on the length of your hair, and that there are 5 different styles that you can choose from too.
Other treatments are around R 650 in price – such as the root retouch which includes your blow dry as well.
We did a quick Q&A with Bridget too…
Where to next for Blow Dry Co?
Franchising in 2019 is the next plan!
Your favourite South African Food of all time?
It must be a traditional roast! Gravy Potatoes, Cauliflower and Cheese – and all the trimmings!
Books or movies?
Both. I do love to read, but sometimes its nice to just zone out too and get lost in a great movie.
Fave item of clothing right now?
Ooooh, my duster coat, I bought it in New York – it’s so warm, I take it everywhere with me.
If you could have dinner with anyone on the planet, who would it be and why?
Hmmm, a tough one – but I would have to say, Mandela. I would love to ask his advice and thoughts on the current situation in the country and what the future holds for all South Africans. He truly had such a powerful voice.
You can also get 10% off your blow dry until end of August every Tuesday and Wednesday – tell them Get It Joburg North sent you! Plus, they are open until 6pm on weekday evenings, so you can even go after work.
