Saint Restaurant in The Marc is a must visit

This is a statement from start to finish and we love it! Different, bold and out of the ordinary are just a few words that come to mind when describing Chef David Higgs and business partner, entrepreneur Gary Kyriacou of Marble fame’s latest restaurant to the test.

In true Higgs’s form, the dining experience is that of a journey, from the moment you arrive, to the moment you depart you will be seeing, or tasting or experiencing something unique every step of the way. Be prepared to take about 50 pictures for your curated Instagram feed!

While Marble has gained kudos for celebrating quintessentially South African fair, Saint sees the powerhouse duo introduce the concept of “Pazzo Italiano”, meaning “Mad Italian” – an offering which encompasses pizza and pasta as well as a range of dishes cooked on woks and an open fire.

Start off with a drink in the bar, where a large marble angel complete with wings et al, appears to be emerging out from over the bar, purple lighting and two rather cool lights that reminded us of ostrich feathers. The room is also an oval space and the flow works well. Once the weather is warmer, the huge glass doors will open to reveal the deck area as well, complete with a mix of couches and tables.

Retro-chic is the phrase that comes to mind – wood, glass, and metal merge to create a flow that works well. The bar flows through to the dining room, with wine cellars and the reception desk spaced out along the way.

The restaurant in itself is enormous, with high ceilings and the same look and feel with plants and the entire kitchen exposed to the view of the guests, and it’s a full compliment in the kitchen, constantly moving amongst the equipment and the shiny pizza oven.

Let the ceiling take your breath away – carefully placed projectors are constantly changing the ceiling, from underwater to floating in pink clouds, to the Sistine Chapel, every time you look up the roof is a different vista.

We were lucky to be hosted to an exclusive Amex Platinum Card Members only evening and the synchronicity between the two is easy to see.

“Unlocking one in a lifetime experiences and giving our clients the opportunity to be part of the thrill of Joburg’s optimism and energy, and most importantly, being there first, is at the heart of what it means to be a valued customer of Amex,” says Chris Wood, Head of American Express South Africa.

“We are constantly seeking ways to wow our customers. Having an Amex card in wallet is about so much more than making a purchase, it’s a lifestyle and the experiences we are crafting in South Africa hold true to the global tagline of “DON’T live life WITHOUT IT™” adds Chris.

Says Gary Kyriacou “American Express has long been supportive of our vision to create exceptional dining experiences for our patrons, and Saint provides us an opportunity to continue that longstanding relationship in an exciting new setting where we will be serving dishes for people on the move – quick to prepare, but tasting and good to look at.”

Due to its immense popularity, booking is certainly advisable.
