Tokara wines triumph in the Tim Atkin SA Special Report
Tokara Wine and Olive Estate is situated in the magnificent setting of Stellenbosch in the heart of South Africa’s Western Cape wine region.
Framed by vineyards and olive groves, Tokara is a highly regarded tourist destination that offers visitors elegant, award winning wines, two beautiful restaurants, an art gallery and sculpture garden as well as some of the best South African Extra Virgin olive oil.
The winery is perched on top of the Helshoogte Pass with panoramic views of False Bay and Table Mountain and is portrayed against a backdrop of the majestic Simonsberg.
The top scorer for Tokara is their super-premium Cabernet Sauvignon which racked up 97 out of 100 and their Telos 2015, followed by the flagship Director’s Reserve Red 2014 and Tokara Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, all collecting on 96 points.
All three these wines are included in what Atkin considers his “wines of the year” – a collection he believes that would compare with the best of any other wine-producing country.
Cabernet Sauvignon has been the cornerstone of Tokara’s red wines from day one after owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira acquired the farm, and their vineyards on the Simonsberg consistently produce consummate award winning wines, considered true expressions of the TOKARA terroir.
Atkin, an accomplished wine commentator with extensive experience when it comes to South Africa, tasted almost 1 980 local wines for his 2018 South African Special Report, now in its seventh year and his largest yet.
