Head over to Parliament…for a great meal!
They have been open for a while, and we have often driven past, but venturing up the twirly stairs to check out this cool spot, opened up a whole new discovery for us.
Parliament have a simple philosophy – good food and drink, made simply, no pretentiousness, just great ingredients, yummy flavours and made for sharing. Considered more of a meeting place than a restaurant persay – this is the place to come for a drink after work (they have a very cool bar) and their cocktails – designed and curated by Evert de Jong. More on ‘Ev’ later.
Parliament is owned by Shayne Holt – who also owns and runs Eatery JHB, THIEF and Coalition (PS – he has opened a Coalition V2 in Pineslopes which we will be sharing about soon) and live-fire cooking is the name of the game here.
Everything is literally cooked on the open flame – it’s an ode to the South African Braai, just created and delivered with a tad more panache. Whilst the menu doesn’t encompass sharing plates per se, sharing is recommended, it just suits the laid-back setting and something to nibble whilest sipping on your cocktails is always recommended.
Shayne’s not your typical chef/restaurant owner – he actually never studied to be a chef and during his years in London being, among others a barman and restaurant manager he taught himself chef skills, but to be honest, it’s his personality that makes it work. Laid back, with a keen sense of humour he somehow just manages to blend everything together. He’s authentic and so are his food offerings.
Okay – what to eat. Well, meat! We munched on the Braai Board – it is literally like sharing a meal right off the braai at home – chicken drummies, wors, chops and some killer Pap balls that we will be returning for pretty soon.
Prawns, calamari and the grilled black mushrooms are also winners. The menu is short, we like that.
So, earlier we mentioned the cocktail oke, Ev. Evert is covered in tattoo’s and is no stranger to the odd job, one of them being as an IT technician whilst doing his degree in BCom Law. As luck would have it, he also found his passion in food and booze rather than in books.
He did an apprenticeship under Chef Arnold Tanzer, then worked as a bar tender and event manager for a number of years before becoming GM and acting director of Molecular Bars. He has also competed in World Class for the past 3 years, coming 7th in SA last year and 4th this year, and recently placed 3rd in world at the Remy Martin Talent Academy in Cognac.
Do yourself a favour and go check them out. The open balcony offers a cool view, and the fact that they are not a huge venue (speaking of which this is the perfect function venue and you can hire it out for your own parties btw) this is set to become one of our fave summer meeting spots. Catch you there!
